"Incorporated in 1903, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway was an offshoot of the Grand Trunk Railway charged with the mission to build a railroad that would span from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Prince Rupert, BC. Such a line would allow the Grand Trunk Railroad to compete against the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian Northern Railway for the lucrative traffic that was beginning to develop in western Canada.

Construction of the actual railroad began in 1905. The main line of the Grand Trunk Pacific ran from Winnipeg through the Yellowhead Pass in the Rocky Mountains, then followed along the Frasier and Skeena rivers to Prince Rupert. The entire line spans roughly 4,800 km, and was finished in April, 1914.

To encourage passenger service on the railway, the Grand Trunk Pacific purchased steamships and provided a service from Prince Rupert to various ports along the coast, including Alaska, Vancouver, Victoria, and Seattle.

The Grand Trunk Pacific was forced into receivership in 1919, and was amalgamated into the Canadian National System by 1923."
